Search for duplicate items: This step will generate a list of duplicate items. When you launch application it will quickly scan system and generate a list of mounted volumes and default folders. Best medical dictation software for mac windows 10. If it doesn't understand you,. ![]() It's a conspiracy of hard disk manufacturers, that's what it is. We start off with these 3TB drives in our iMacs, and the next thing you know we're eyeing up external RAID drives. We're also finding that our Macs are so full that they are running visibly slower, infuriatingly slower than we bought them. Until we unmask the cunning storage manufacturers who make us create so many files, we can use to at least get back some of the space. Tidy Up is specifically for finding duplicate files, as we do somehow accrue a lot of those, and they are the one thing you can safely delete when you need to save space -- at least, in theory. In practice, as the app itself warns, there are cases where some software requires duplicate files in various places, so just deleting anything you see can do some serious damage. At least with a Mac, the worst that is likely to happen is that you will stop one particular application launching. Not exactly ideal, but not the end of the world -- especially if you got it from the Mac App Store, where reinstalling is a matter of one click and a cup of coffee. Once it's done, Tidy Up presents a panel listing all duplicates. It consciously makes no attempt to say which file is the original and which are the copies: if you have an original file and then 10 identical ones, Tidy Up will show you all 11 at once. You get a thumbnail view of each one, and clicking on any of them brings up three further views of detail. There's the content of the file, so you can see or read it; there's the exact path to where the file is held on your Mac; and then, finally, there are attributes -- the file's type, size and created/modified date. In our tests, it was that path that was the most useful: we only tracked down certain duplicate photographs because we could see one single folder was different in a ten-deep path. It was then up to us to choose what to delete, and to do the deleting. This is not a quick job, as you have to go through each set of duplicates, one set at a time, and make your choice. Yet even as we hankered for a big red thermonuclear button, we were also aware that this is one occasion where you want to be forced to take your time and consider things. Tidy Up has this good mix of power with responsibility. There's an Advanced Mode that lets you get very specific about the types of files and the locations it looks for, but we found the Simple Mode did all we needed. Advanced Mode does have the ability to search for duplicate emails, which made us sit up very interested - but it doesn't work with IMAP accounts (because it would then need remote server access), so our Apple Mail accounts remain the mess they always were. Tidy Up is the kind of app that you're likely to run once in a blue moon: incredibly useful the day you buy it, but then untouched until the next time you notice your Mac is filling up, so we expect we'd just dig it out again when needed.
